Commander Roy Dale Awbrey, USN retired, died May 23, 2010, after a long illness with progressive supranuclear palsy. He was born in Kingsville, TX in 1933, and graduated from Texas A&M, Kingsville. He attended OCS in Newport, RI and enjoyed 30 years of naval service as an aviator and CO of various commands. He was the epitome of an officer and a gentleman.
Roy was known for his kindness, compassion and gentleness. His wood carvings of birds, ducks and walking sticks are treasured by his many friends and family. He also painted exquisite watercolors. He was a faithful member of Old Donation Episcopal Church where he served in leadership positions over the years and was proud to be a member of their glorious choir for over 40 years.
Roy is survived by his cherished wife of 28 years, Phyllis, three sons, Roy Dale Awbrey Jr. and wife Virginia of Virginia Beach, David and wife Gayle of Cocoa Beach, FL, Charles of Knotts Island, NC, daughter Lauryn and husband Neil Maclure of Harpenden, England. Also survived by Phyllis’ children, Janet Tenerowicz and husband Joseph of Chesapeake, VA, Kenneth Stanley and wife Patrona of Debary, FL, Edward Stanley of Frederick, MD, and Alice LaBudde of Virginia Beach. Grandchildren include Ian, William and Stuart Maclure, Sara, Patrick, Melissa, Andrew, David Awbrey, Lee Macaughin, Michael Love, Emily and Elizabeth Tenerowicz, 1st Lts Kevin Stanley and wife Molly, Shannon, Alyssa, Kristen and Geoffrey Stanley and great grandfather to Connor Stanley. Also survived by his sister, Vernalyn Bradshaw and husband Claude of Robstown, TX, nieces, grandnieces and nephews all of S. Texas.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church 4449 N. Witchduck Rd on June 12, at 2:30 PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Fund or Food Bank of Old Donation Episcopal Church. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family.
