Roy Wayne Owens, 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 22, 2023. Wayne, a native of Newport News, VA, graduated as a proud Typhoon from Newport News High School where he excelled in both basketball and baseball. He was very popular among his friends and was voted “Best Looking” in his senior year. He furthered his education by getting a degree from Christopher Newport College (CNU). Afterward, he served his country in the Army National Guard for four years.
In February 1973, he married the love of his life Judy (Brandt). Their son, Brandt Owens, exemplifies and shares a lovely mixture of both his dad and mom.
Wayne began working for his father-in law, Hunter Brandt, as a brick mason where he learned the art of laying brick and working with his hands. He then took a job with the Department of Public Works for the City of Newport News where he met many lifelong friends. After retirement, it didn’t take him long to find his way to the golf course! As an avid golfer, he loved the game almost as much as he loved and enjoyed his faithful golf buddies. He and Judy attended Hilton Baptist Church for many years. Friends and family can readily attest to Wayne’s soft spoken, easy-going nature, as well as his lightning-fast wit which simply made him a joy and delight to be around.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Sonny and Lois Owens (Histand), step-father Jim Histand, as well as his older brother; Valley Owens. He is survived by his wife Judy, son, Brandt (Davin Jackson) granddaughters Merrick Mock and Kinley Crenshaw, and great-grandson Toon Humphries. He will be greatly missed by his sisters-in-law; Anne Owens and Marsha Brandt Thomas (Richard), nieces Teresa Crist (Mike) and Karen Collins (Adam) and several great nieces and nephews as well as many cousins.
A Celebration of Life in memory of Wayne will be announced at a future date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lewy Body Dementia Association .
