Rufus Anthony Jones, 82, passed away on March 10, 2022, in his home surrounded by family. He was born and raised in Norfolk and a long-time resident of Virginia Beach. Rufus was a graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School, Class of ’57.

Rufus was the son of the late Henry and Marie (Memple) Jones and was also preceded in death by his siblings; Donald Jones, Marcia Pierozzi and Henry Jones.

Survived by his loving wife, Carole of 58 years, his eldest son, Todd A. Jones and wife, Alicia; daughter, Christine M. Dowd and son, Rodney A. Jones, and three beautiful grandchildren; McKenna Finzel and husband, Zachary; Cameron Dowd and Michael Jones, Virginia Beach.

For nearly fifty years, Rufus worked for W.F. Magann Corporation where he retired as the company’s Executive Vice President. He embodied an unparalleled work ethic and motivated others to do their best in every aspect of life.

Rufus served in the United States Coast Guard Reserves. He also gave his time and resources to the communities he loved, as a past Grand Commander of the Order of Alhambra Norfolk Virginia, and a past President of the Amphibious Base Little Creek Baseball League. He also supported Old Dominion University Athletics and ODU Academic Scholarships.

Known to most as a man who never met a stranger, Rufus loved to golf. He was very proud of his hole-in-one at Bayville Golf Club 5th hole. He could also throw a 6-iron farther than anyone. He was a big fan of Notre Dame football and ODU athletics. He loved spending his free time maintaining a beautiful yard and, most importantly, being with family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at 2:00PM, at Old Donation Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. A reception will immediately follow in the parish hall.

Carol I'm so sorry to hear Rufus passed away. I ran into Teresa Wilda today and she told me. Mom sends her deepest sympathy and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

My heart aches for there will always be a hole that Rufus could fill. I still remember the first joke he ever told us. I have never laughed so hard in your company. He was the best medicine. Remembering all our trips around the world and USA that we took. They were the best of times. With much love, Steve and Debbie

Dear Carol, Sumner and I are saddened to read about Rufus’s passing. We have so many fond memories of our Friday night dinners at Bayville. Rufus always had a funny story or skit. He will be missed by all that knew him. Our sincerest condolences.

Kathy and I (John) are heartbroken after we heard that Rufus had passed. He was truly an inspiration to our extended family. He will be missed. God Bless and remember to wish for calm seas and mild weather during all of his travels in the afterlife. I guess it is finally time to pass over the river and rest under the shade of the tree's.

It is with admiration and love that we say good bye to Rufus. He was a person who impacted the lives of many and modeled the importance of family first, fun prevails and dance like nobody’s watching. Over the past 40 years we have shared Christmas morning. I will cherish those memories. Love to all the Jones! Let his light shine through you forever!
