Ruth Mary O’Neil Heroux passed away on December 10, 2024, at her home in Norfolk, VA. Ruth was born on October 21, 1934, in Manville, Rhode Island, to Fedora LaBerge O’Neil and John T. O’Neil. She was a graduate of St. Xavier Academy in Providence, Rhode Island.
In 1953, Ruth married Joseph Jean Heroux in West Warwick, Rhode Island. During their marriage, Ruth and Joe lived in several states due to his service in the U.S. Navy. When Joe retired, they remained in Norfolk, Virginia. Ruth was retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) where she was a supply clerk.
Ruth had many hobbies and interests including gardening, cooking, traveling, and politics. Although she was somewhat reserved, if she liked someone, she went out of her way to show them how much they meant to her.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband and her daughter, Linda Marie Heroux. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Heroux Ferguson, and son, David Alan Heroux (Cornelia), grandchildren Joseph Ferguson (Crystal), Elizabeth Leki (Janine), and several great grandchildren.
In accordance with Ruth’s wishes, a private memorial will be held, and her final resting place will be with her husband at the Albert Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family expresses deep gratitude to Sentara Hospice and Visiting Angels (especially Rose Doswell) who cared for Ruth with dignity and respect in her final days as well as Dr. Mark Skees who was her longtime physician.
