She was born on October 20, 1939, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to her loving parents, Mildred and Joseph Hayes. Sandy’s life was marked by a commitment to helping others through her profound career in healthcare. After graduating from Crosby High School, Sandy attended the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing and achieved her dream of becoming a nurse when she graduated in 1960. Throughout her career, Sandy’s compassion and dedication shone brightly. She held various positions in the medical field, always striving to make a positive impact on the lives of those in her care. Her final and most cherished role was serving as the Director of Nursing for a 180-bed long-term care facility. In this position, Sandy’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the well-being of the residents and her colleagues left an indelible mark on the facility and the countless lives she touched. In addition to her remarkable career, Sandy found great joy in her hobbies and spending time with family and friends. She cherished the moments she shared with loved ones at two of her favorite places, Lake Gaston and the Outer Banks. These serene locations served as the backdrop for countless memories of laughter, relaxation, and togetherness, where Sandy’s warm spirit and love for life shone brightly. Both joy and sorrow marked Sandy’s journey through life.
She is preceded in death by her ex-husband, Thomas Trombley; and her beloved grandson, Thomas Karafa. Their memories will forever hold a special place in her heart. Sandy is survived by her life partner of 37 years, Mary Deans, who shared in her adventures and provided unwavering support throughout the years. Sandy’s legacy lives on through her children: Tracie Karafa, Kathleen Smith, Lisa Strickland, and Elizabeth Faulkner. Her legacy of love and strength extends to her sons-in-law, John Karafa, Ronald Smith Sr, Scott Strickland, and Brian Faulkner, who were not only family but also dear friends. Sandy’s greatest pride and joy were her 10 grandchildren: Ronald Smith Jr, Ryan Smith, Joseph Deavers, Kristin Deavers, Emily Karafa Barreto (Hiago Barreto), Brandon Faulkner, Bradley Faulkner, Kathleen Custis (Marc Custis), and Kelsey Faulkner. She delighted in their achievements and cherished every moment spent with them. Sandy is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Lana Deavers and Windsor Smith, who brought an extra sparkle to her eyes and a warmth to her heart. Her legacy lives on through these young lives as they continue to carry forward her love and spirit. Sandy’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and resilience will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
