Sandra “Sandy” Peterson Nuzum gracefully passed into the arms of our Lord and Savior on April 26, 2024. Born in Brockton, Massachusetts on April 3, 1956 to Henry and Janet (Swift) Peterson, Sandy is survived by her husband of 43 years, John Mark Nuzum; daughters Chelsea (Max) Flowers and Krista (Mason) McVerry; grandchildren Sandra “Winnie” Wynne and Hallie Maxwell Flowers and Leah Garner McVerry; brother Doug (Tess) Peterson; sister Joy (George) Lyon; sister-in-law Mary Alice (Tom) Tricot; and many nieces and nephews.
Sandy attended Clarkstown High School North in New York. She received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in special education from the University of Florida. Sandy served as a special education teacher in Atlanta and later in Virginia Beach at Trantwood Elementary School. She worked alongside her loving husband at United Organic Services until their retirement.
Sandy loved deeply and was devoted to God, her family and friends. She survived stage 4 cancer diagnosis the last five years with strength, grace and dignity. She will be remembered for her kind and loving heart, infectious smile and compassionate service to others.
A memorial service celebrating Sandy’s life will be held on Monday, May 6 at 11:00 AM at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 212 19th Street Virginia Beach, VA 23451. A reception will follow at the church.
