Seymour Winston – Norfolk
Seymour “Sy” Winston passed away in Norfolk on August 21 at the age of 93. Sy was born in New York
City to Bessie and Samuel Weinberg. During World War II, Sy served in the Army Medical Corps in
England.
Sy spent his early working years in the furniture business in New York City. In his fifties he moved to Virginia to work in the salvage business in Portsmouth. Upon retirement, Sy returned to his lifelong passion for swimming, serving for many years as a certified life guard at the Jewish Community Center. When the pool would open, Sy was there to greet his regulars. He swam daily into his eighties. Sy was also a dedicated volunteer for the Cousteau Society and WHRO.
Sy leaves to honor his memory, his loving niece, Susan Eilberg, and her husband, Jim, and their sons Seth and Herbert. He also leaves a sister, Muriel Sherman, of Chicago. Sy was predeceased by his son, Alan, and his brother, Alfred Weinberg, both of New York City.
