HAMPTON, VA – Sharon Ann Meddley, 75, passed away on October 8, 2020, after a month long fight with a bacterial lung infection, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, VA.
She was born on January 27, 1945 to Edward Reiss and Virginia Radziszewski Reiss in Syracuse, NY. When she graduated high school, she took classes at a community college and worked as a receptionist and a file clerk. She met her first husband, Alan Weill, at that time, and they were married in 1970, until divorcing in 1980. She continued raising her two sons as a homemaker, and married her second husband, Henry Meddley III in 1990. They moved to Newport News, VA in 1998, and after separating in 1999, she remained in Virginia with her mother in law, Arlene Meddley, until 2000, when they both moved back to New York. At the end of 2001, Sharon came back to Virginia permanently, where she lived with her son in Hampton for nine years, and then at Seton Manor Senior Apartments for nearly ten years.
She faithfully attended Calvary Assembly of God Church, Hampton, for nearly 18 years. She also volunteered with the Foster Grandparent Program, through Hampton Social Services, for six years. She generously donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, as well as sponsoring a child with Children International. Anyone who knew her could confirm that she enjoyed genealogical research, not only for her family, but for anyone who needed help tracing their roots. She enjoyed watching figure skating and ballet. During her time at Seton Manor, you could usually find her in the community room, either working on a puzzle, playing bingo, or researching on the computer. She also enjoyed riding around at Christmastime, seeing all the lights and displays. Last Christmas, she took great delight in the light show at Next Level Church, Yorktown.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Edward, in 1999; her mother, Virginia, in 2004; and her brother, Paul Reiss, in 2012. Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Margot Cole, and husband Richard, of Hannibal, NY; sons David Weill, of Oneonta, NY and James (Jim) Weill, of Hampton, VA; five nieces: Jennifer, Annie, Bridget, Susan, and Beth, all currently residing in the Syracuse/ Rochester area; and her numerous friends from Seton Manor and Calvary Assembly, including Linda Jones and Christie Schwenk, who visited Sharon in the hospital and are providing support to her son during this difficult time.
Special thanks need to be given to the wonderful staff at Riverside, who helped care for her during her the last month: the nurses, aides, and doctors on 5 East, as well as the respiratory and physical therapists, and the dietary staff. Also, to Michelle, care coordinator and Beth, palliative care, for their compassion and professionalism.
As per her wishes, she will be cremated, and Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at 7pm, at Calvary Assembly of God Church, 1380 N Mallory St, Hampton VA 23663.
