Shirley M. Hopkins of Virginia Beach peacefully passed away on February 28, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and warmth.
A proud graduate of Maury High School and alumna of Old Dominion University, Shirley formed lifelong friendships that she cherished deeply. She dedicated 30 years of service to the government, working with the Navy Family Service, where her compassion and commitment touched countless lives.
In retirement, Shirley found joy in life’s simple pleasures—playing Mahjong, Bridge, Tennis, and Pickleball with dear friends. She remained active in her community, serving on the Senior Service Committee and as a member of the NARFE Seaside Branch. Her monthly gatherings with her Maury High School Alumni “Ya Ya Sisters” at Gus’s in Virginia Beach were a cherished tradition that brought laughter and camaraderie.
She was a devoted mother, and her loving daughter, Gwen Hopkins of California, will forever hold her memory close.
Per her wishes, there will he no formal services. To honor her love of nature and the sea, Shirley requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of her favorite places, Buff’s Garden in Virginia Beach by clicking here. Her commemorative stone there reads:
“There’s no place I’d rather be than sitting in the garden watching the beautiful sea.”
She often joked, saying, “I have beachfront property!”—a reflection of her wonderful sense of humor and love for life.
Shirley will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her kindness and love will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Condolences and memorial donations may be offered by visiting www.vacremationsociety.com.
