Ann Marie Dougherty left a message on September 12, 2011:
Mr. Gilman was a kind man. He was always smiling and loved life. He gave our children summer jobs when they were young, watering his garden while he was away, bringing them gifts, tiny pottery fiqurines from Spain. It's said that it takes a village to raise a child. He was responsible for teaching our children responsibility and confidance in themselves. He taught them to dust cauliflower for insects or was it canteloupes? They made mistakes and he understood that. They learned to move the sprinklers to the next section after so many minutes. Jeanne, the redhead is a 3rd grade teacher, Tom works for a bank in NYC and volunteers in a soup kitchen every Monday. Maureen volunteers in a literacy program in Phila. I believe they are good people because of good people like Mr. Gilman in their lives. He was the salt of the earth. He will be remembered and missed. A hug to you, Margaret, and to all the family. Our deepest sympathy, sincerely, Ann Marie Dougherty
