It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Terry “Mac” McCarthy. He tragically left us in the early morning hours on May 27, 2025 after spending a wonderful weekend with family.
Terry is predeceased by his parents, Charles D. McCarthy and Madeleine Shannahan McCarthy. He is survived by his brother Richard “Mac” McCarthy and wife Kathleen, whom Terry considered his sister; his nieces Megan Garrett (Bernie), Brighid Orlando and nephews Seamus McCarthy (Kathy) and Kieran McCarthy. Terry had 10 great nieces and nephews whom he adored and cherished as his own. Terry also leaves behind so many dear friends both in Virginia Beach and in Massachusetts who mourn his loss deeply.
Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, Terry lived there for half of his 74 years. He graduated from Framingham High School and Villanova University (72) – and was a diehard Wildcats fan. In 1993 Terry moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia to be near family. He fell in love with Chix Beach and he traded snow for sand and never looked back.
Terry Mac was a former teacher at Framingham High School and was the Athletic Director at Marian Catholic High School. He spent 50 years of his life doing what he loved the most: officiating. He was an outstanding official in all major sports, but basketball was his true passion. Terry Mac was an active and respected member of IABBO, HRBOA, and EOA. He served as EOA Football Commissioner for the Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation and Assistant Commissioner with EOA Softball. T Mac officiated games at the college and high school levels and also youth leagues-especially those games of his great nieces. He was well known and respected by all Athletic Directors, Coaches and Players. He was employed by Cardinal Messenger of Virginia Beach.
Terry Mac will be remembered for his fun loving, easy going way of life, and of course, for his kind heart and love of cats.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held later this summer. The Family would like to thank the Virginia Beach Fire Department for all of their help during this difficult time.
