Our beloved “Tede” Thelma Day Johnson passed on October 17, 2014 at the age of 85. She was born on November 3, 1928 in Morristown, NJ. She lived 43 years in Bemus Point, NY. Tede was a special education school teacher in Jamestown, NY. She held master degrees from Fredonia and Buffalo State Colleges. Upon retirement in 1987, she moved to Newport News, VA to be close to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Herman Johnson, son, Antone V. Johnson II, sister Beverly D. Elwart, nephew Leo Elwart and her parents Alfred L. and Thelma S. Day. Tede is survived by son, Rick Johnson and wife Patty, daughter Valarie Stugelmeyer and husband Duane, 4 grandchildren, Aaron Herman Johnson, Sarah Hudgins and husband, Tommy, Shauna Bowser and husband Mike and Derek Stugelmeyer. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren, Hannah and Joey Hudgins and Ayden and Grayson Bowser, brother Alfred Day Jr. and nephew David Elwart. Tede was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer at the Virginia Living Museum since 1988 logging in over 13, 500 hours to a place she held dear to her heart. She was a nature lover and wild life artist trained under Jim Wilson. Family was the most important thing to Tede and was affectionately known as “Nanny” and “Mother Nature” by her family and many friends. Tede lived her life to the fullest and had a heart of gold. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She will not only be missed by her family but the countless friends she made during her life’s journey. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Tede’s name can be made to the Virginia Living Museum, 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601. Visiting hours are Monday, October 20 from 5:00 p.m. – 7: 00 p.m. at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 7415 River Road, Newport News, VA 23607. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6812, River Road, Newport News, VA, 23607.
