I lost contact with Tim sometime during late 2020. I kept reaching out to him via Facebook and got no response. Unfortunately, I just learned that he passed away. Tim was my first real boss in northern Virginia. My wife and I moved here in 1996 to work for Aol. Within a year of being in a quasi-insane group, I was able to transfer to an amazing team under Carlton Geckler. Carlton hired Tim to run his support organization for the AOL web hosting business. Carlton placed me in Tim’s group. I quickly came to learn that Tim was a kind but firm leader. He was great a giving feedback and coaching me through politics. Equally admirable was the respect he had for us techies keeping all those servers up and running and customers happy.
One day he asked me to join him at a meeting being held in Reston, which was about 10 miles from our offices in Ashburn. He said the meeting was an hour long but told me that we would likely be away for over 2 hours because he wanted to treat me to lunch. We attended the meeting with Matt Korn at the Aol data center building in T
Reston and then headed to Ariake which is the best sushi place in NoVA.
It was a really nice lunch and then he popped out a folder a said I was being promoted to Manager. I was shocked and then confused because he was the manager of the group. Then he said a line that solidify part of who I am as a manager. He said (paraphrasing): “You are the right person to run this team. I will always be here to help you. Part of my job is to make sure I have people take over my job so I can grow as well.”
We eventually went in different directions but we would periodically check in on each other via Instant Messenger and then Facebook.
Tim was a family man. I remember how he always had photos of his little ones in his office and in his jeep. The kids eventually grew up and he and his wife separated. I checked in on him more frequently when I learned that he was no longer with his family. I even visited him once at his home in a ski resort town in VA. It was just him and his dog.
Tim served his country and Tim was the very first web master for the White House under the Clinton administration. He continued writing code for small businesses and individuals to earn some extra money on top of his retirement.
Tim was a good man and I am glad I got to know him and call him a friend.
