A beloved mother and grandmother, Vernice Faye Williams passed away on November 28th, 2023 at the age of 78 years of age. Vernice was born on January 9th, 1945 to Catherine and Phillip Fetter in Pennsylvania. She grew up in a big family and had five other siblings Wayne, Gene, Harry, Peggy, and Garry. Primarily, her early life was spent in Poquoson, Virginia.
Even from an early age, Vernice did what she could in order to make money. She started out babysitting younger kids in order to make some pocket change. Later on in life, she found her way to a development company. Then she went on to work at a few different local 7/11 stores.
Vernice was a mother of three and a grandmother to three. On August 14th, 1963, Jimmie Carrol Williams was born who would be taken in by Vernice when he was around five years old and treated as her firstborn son. Then on January 3rd, 1972, Vernice had her second child Cathy Ann Baxley. Then she had the baby of the family Keith Scott Williams on June 7th, 1975. Her first grandchild, Michael Scott Williams, was born on July 31st, 1989. She was gifted with her second grandchild Katlin Baxley, now known as Mercury, on October 9th, 1999 and her third child Joshua Baxley on September 3rd, 2001.
After the birth of her grandchildren, Vernice found what would become her favorite hobby. This hobby was her grandchildren. She would often take care of and spoil her grandkids to the point where they would fight to stay with her more. She would have to give them equal visits in order to calm them down. Even as she and her grandkids got older, Vernice’s passion, love, and desire to spend time with her grandkids would never falter. Vernice also enjoyed gardening and was quite spectacular at it. She would grow tomatoes, squash, watermelon, eggplants, cucumbers, and many other plants. She loved showing off her gardens and sharing the fruits of her and her grandkids labor in her garden. Vernice also showed interest in sewing. She made many things for her grandkids such as special blankets and curtains. Vernice also enjoyed cooking for her family. She would always make pineapple upside down cake for holidays which her family always loved. Vernice always made sure that everyone had what they needed before her at family gatherings and would always be the last one to sit down and be the first one to get up when someone needed anything.
Around mid November of 2023, Vernice began to show worrying symptoms and was found to be suffering from lung cancer and the related symptoms. She was brought to the hospital where she stayed until she passed peacefully in her sleep. She spent a majority of her stay with her daughter Cathy, son in law Patrick, and grandson Joshua.
Vernice was predeceased by her mother Catherine Fetter, father Phillip Fetter, son Jimmie Williams, sister Peggy Gibbs, brother Garry Fetter, and grandchild Michael Williams. She is survived by her brothers Wayne, Gene, and Harry Fetter, her daughter Cathy Baxley and her husband Patrick Baxley, her son Scott Williams, and grandchildren Joshua Baxley and Mercury Baxley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Toys for Tots in her memory to symbolize her love of her children and grandchildren. https://www.tmcfunding.com/funds/in-loving-memory-of-vernice-faye-williams/8913/
