VICTORIA (VICKI) HOWELL, 65, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2024, with her husband by her side. She was born February 18, 1959, in New York, New York, the second youngest of seven children to the late Jaime and Gloria (Tolentino) Martinez. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers Leo Martinez and Dionisio Martinez. Vicki was a Bronx-native, lived in all five boroughs of New York City, and worked on Wall Street after high school before moving to the Hampton Roads area in the early 1980s. She was a certified Licensed Practical Nurse for 15 years, obtained her associate’s degree from Virginia Peninsula Community College and worked toward obtaining her bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University. She worked in both administrative and nursing professions during her lifetime and last served as the Director of Nursing for the Governor’s Inn Retirement Center in Newport News. Vicki was also an active volunteer for many years, serving the community as a local leader in Better Marriages alongside her husband, working to enhance the relationships of other couples. She enjoyed dancing, attending plays, playing games, listening to music, and spending time with family.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 21 years, Brian Howell; daughters Sabrina Winters, Heather Brooks and Brianna Howell; granddaughter Arianna Brooks; brothers Jaime (Jimmy) Martinez Jr., Jose (Joe) Martinez, and Florencio (Floyd) Martinez; sister Gloria Eason; sister-in-law Nilda Hobbs; nieces Vivienne (Viv) Craft, Denise Thornton, and Yvette (Yvie) Jurscaga; nephew Joey Martinez; and numerous other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was loved by many extended family and friends and will be greatly missed.
A private memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Ataxia Foundation. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed to www.vacremationsociety.com.
