Walter Babcock, 74, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on December 24, 1949, to Linsley and Merthel Babcock in Corning, New York.
Walter’s formative years included attending Skaneateles High School in Skaneateles, New York, in 1968. During his years in high school, he engaged in the school’s athletic program, actively participating in both football and wrestling. Upon graduating, Walter continued his academic journey at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. He successfully obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering Technology and Construction Management in 1972. This academic achievement set the stage for his enduring career as a Senior Construction Estimator, actively contributing to the building of highways and bridges throughout the United States. Notably, Walter was also a dedicated member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Later on, he became a longstanding member of the Jaycees.
In Cortland, New York, Walter met the love of his life, Lynda Cowen, and they exchanged vows in 1976. The marriage resulted in the birth of two children, Kelly Marie and Michael Lewis. Walter held his family in the highest regard, working tirelessly to provide for them. Beyond his professional commitments, Walter found joy in reading, golfing, gardening, Sudoku, fishing, and working on cars.
In loving tribute to Walter, those left to honor and celebrate his memory include his devoted wife, Lynda Cowen Babcock, who stood by his side through every joy and challenge. Their enduring love formed the foundation of a life well-lived.
He is survived by his two adoring children, Kelly Marie Barrett and Michael Lewis Babcock, who carry forward the lessons and values he imparted with unwavering dedication. Kelly and Michael are joined in their grief by their partners, James Barrett and Mary Edison, who became integral members of Walter’s extended family.
The joy of Walter’s life extended to his cherished grandchild, Ava Madelyn Barrett, who brought him immeasurable happiness. She will forever hold dear the love and wisdom passed down by her adoring grandfather.
Walter is also survived by his brothers, Duane P. Babcock and Allen K. Babcock, along with their respective partners, Mary Gross and Karen Babcock. The bonds forged in childhood continued to strengthen over the years, creating a brotherhood that was an enduring source of support and camaraderie for both Walter and his extended family.
Additionally, a multitude of caring friends and family members unite in preserving the enduring legacy of his memory.
A graveside service is planned for the Spring in Cortland, New York, at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s honor can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association by visiting www.alz.org.
