William (“Bill”) West born in Norfolk, VA on March 7, 1959, passed away Tuesday, July 9 after a fifteen month courageous battle with cancer. Bill served in the United States Navy for nearly ten years before transitioning to telecommunication, retiring from Cox Communications. He was proud of his military service and was very engaged in world politics. Always being true to his passions, he never shied away from lively political discussions with friends and family. An avid reader, Bill enjoyed sharing helpful advice on a wide range of topics. He was especially fond of reading books on American military history, cooking for family and friends, and following the Washington Nationals baseball team.
Bill was married to the love of his life Julie for twenty-four years. Together they enjoyed hiking, bicycling and the companionship of their beloved dog, Bella. He adored his niece, Karen and nephews; Noah, Evan, Jacob and Dan. He rarely missed a sporting event, music recital or school play and assisted with transportation to and from school functions whenever a need arose.
Bill loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed the company of his close circle of friends on many walks through Sandy Bottom Nature Park. The family sincerely thanks Nadia, Leslie and Tony for their unwavering support and his walking friends Fred, David, Peter, Elke, Al, and Eddie.
In addition to his wife, niece and nephews, Bill is survived by his mother-in-law Jean Sperling, his sister-in-law Laura (husband Tim), and brothers-in-law Ron (wife Gigi) and Todd (wife Kim).
We sincerely appreciate the exceptional care provided by Dr. Paul-Jeyadhas, Dr. VanEcho and the entire oncology team at the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at the Sandy Bottom Nature Park Conference Center on 04 August 2024 at 10 am. A walk through the park will follow the service to celebrate what Bill loved doing the most. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements.
