CDR William S. Hastings, USN Retired of Virginia Beach, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the age of 86. Born in Portland, Maine to the late David and Mabel Libby Hastings, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Kathryn P. Hastings.
He was a graduate of Deering High School, Portland, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and the College of William and Mary. Upon retirement from active duty, Bill served in the Navy Reserves until 1970 when he established his own advertising sales business.
Bill was a member of the Oceana-Lynnhaven-Golden Lions Club for more than 40 years, American Legion Post 113, serving most recently as chaplain and was a faithful and active member of Thalia United Methodist Church. A devoted husband, father and man of great faith, he is survived by his children Janet, David and wife Debbie, and Paul, grandchildren Caitlin, Allison, William, Michael, Emily and Warren.
A memorial service will be held this Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Thalia United Methodist Church, 4321 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23452 with the Rev. David A. Goodpasture officiating. A reception will follow the service. Interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Thalia United Methodist Church or the Lions Club, P. 0. Box 3262, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cremate.org.
